DAY 2) BAKU CITY AND OLD CITY TOUR

It was the place, on the hill by the very sea, where ancient Baku originated. Icheri Shekher is the oldest living quarter in Baku. It was declared a historical and cultural reserve in 1977, and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Sometimes, Icheri Shekher is referred to as a fortress, because its area of 221 km2 is fully surrounded with a well-preserved vallum. The territory of Icheri Shekher was inhabited with people as early as in the Bronze Age and by the VIII-XI centuries it had been completely populated.

- Shirvanshahlar Palace-The Palace of the Shirvanshahs (Azerbaijani: Şirvanşahlar Sarayı, Persian: ک اخ شروان شاهان ) is a 15th-century palace built by the Shirvanshahs and described by UNESCO as “one of the pearls of Azerbaijan’s architecture”. It is located in the Inner City of Baku,[1]Azerbaijan and, together with the Maiden Tower, forms an ensemble of historic monuments inscribed under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments.[2] The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah’s mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi’s mausoleum (the so-called “mausoleum of the dervish”), south of the palace, a portal in the east, Murad’s gate, a reservoir and the remnants of a bath house.[3] Earlier, there was an ancient mosque, next to the mausoleum. There are still ruins of the bath and the lamb, belonging to the west of the tomb.

The pentagonal complex , which has a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a tetra pillar-altar in the middle, was built during the 17 th and 18 th centuries.
- Trip to “Fire Mountain “-“Yanardag” –a mountain on Absheron peninsula , 25 km from north of Baku.Literally, the word “Yanardag” means “Blazing mountain”. Blazing bodies of flame dance on stones and floor. Yanar dag is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, which itself is known as the “land of fire.

DAY 6) GOBUSTAN TOUR – Mud Volcano

It is known for hosting thousands of rock engravings spread over 100 square km depicting hunting scenes, people, ships, constellations, and animals. Its oldest petroglyphs date from the 12 th century BC. In 2007, UNESCO included the ‘Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape’ in the World Heritage list.

[1] Local people call them “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water) and “bozdag” (grey mountain) alongside its geographical name – mud volcanoes.
